I would use a similar argument with people who were supportive of mandatory vaccinations. I would say to them that, even though they themselves might be happy with the product which was being mandated, one day it may be a product that THEY don't want injected into their body, and for this reason it was important to respect freedom of choice. I was never successful in getting them to see this point.

People are selfish in a base way, and this means they usually cannot place themselves in other people's shoes, cannot see beyond their immediate temporary interests which in this case are driven, among other things, by the need to be appreciated by others, and therefore by the fear of standing out in the crowd.
